Leverkusen’s Martin Terrier Out for the Season After Achilles Injury

Bayer Leverkusen has suffered a significant setback as forward Martin Terrier has been ruled out for the rest of the season due to a ruptured Achilles tendon. The injury occurred during Leverkusen’s Bundesliga victory over Borussia Monchengladbach, with Terrier being substituted just eight minutes into the match.

Terrier’s Injury and Impact

The French forward, who joined Leverkusen from Rennes last July, sustained the injury after an awkward turn on the pitch. He was replaced by defender Piero Hincapie, and the worst fears were confirmed after post-match tests.

Terrier has contributed two goals and two assists in 20 appearances across all competitions this season. While not prolific, his presence and versatility in attack have been valuable to Xabi Alonso’s side. Unfortunately, he now joins another key attacker, Victor Boniface, on the sidelines, further depleting Leverkusen’s offensive options.

Xabi Alonso’s Reaction

Speaking after the match, Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso expressed concern even before the official diagnosis.

“It doesn’t look good,” Alonso admitted. “The way he looked back is typical of an Achilles injury. It’s a shame for Martin. There will be tests tomorrow, but the feeling at the moment is not good.”

Teammates Share Sympathy

Granit Xhaka, one of Leverkusen’s midfield leaders, also sympathized with Terrier’s plight.

“I really hope it’s not what we think and what he felt,” Xhaka said. “It would be a slap in the face for the club and us players. It’s something that will keep you out for a while.”

Florian Wirtz Shines Despite Setback

Amid the unfortunate news, Florian Wirtz delivered a standout performance against Monchengladbach. The young German international scored twice and provided an assist, continuing his remarkable form against Gladbach. Wirtz has now registered nine goal involvements (four goals and five assists) in just nine games against this opponent, the most he has achieved against any Bundesliga team.

Speaking after the match, Wirtz highlighted Leverkusen’s determination to remain in the title race.

“We’re right in the middle of a title fight again—you can dream a little bit,” Wirtz told Sky Germany. “I love playing against Gladbach.”

Leverkusen’s Title Aspirations

The victory over Monchengladbach allowed Leverkusen to keep pace with Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich. Despite the challenges posed by injuries, the team remains optimistic about their chances of defending their league title.

Terrier’s absence will undoubtedly test Leverkusen’s depth and resilience as they push for success domestically and in European competitions. For now, the team will rely on players like Wirtz and Xhaka to step up and fill the void left by their sidelined stars.
